Description
Construction began on Latimer Junior High School in 1898. On September 2, 1901, the school, known then as the New Third Ward School, was dedicated. The school was named in honor of Alexander Latimer, a former local school board president. In 1915 Latimer, located on the corner of Tripoli and North James Streets in Pittsburgh's North Side neighborhood, became a junior high school to help accommodate student overcrowding at Allegheny High School. Latimer Junior High School closed in 1982 and was sold to a developer who converted the building into School House Apartments, which preserve many of the original features of the structure, including the stairways, and classroom numbers.
