Description
Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, located at 50 Montgomery Place in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood, opened in September 1973. The building, designed by architects Liff, Justh and Chetli, cost approximately $4.7 million to complete and could accommodate 1,100 students. The school was designed with an open plan that included six connected modified hexagons with each containing seven classrooms. Angles formed by walls delineate space without enclosing it. The final structure maintains a low profile compatible with the surroundings but incorporates three levels, each of which delivers the benefits of a one-story facility.
