Description
Daniel Webster School was named for the American statesman. The school was built in 1874 and was located at 700-24 Reedsdale Street. Originally known as the First Ward School, it was established in 1835 in the basement of the South Common Methodist Episcopal Church. It was the first public school on the North Side, and was conducted by John Kelly, a highly esteemed educator and linguist. Many famous names were associated with the First Ward School when it was first established. Some of these included, Andrew and Thomas Carnegie, Robert Pitcairn, David B. Oliver, William Schoyer, Henry Phipps, and Alex Pitcairn. The school was closed in 1962 and razed in 1963. The property was sold to the URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority) in September of 1966.
