Description
O’Hara School, located at 25th and Smallman Streets in the Strip District section of Pittsburgh, was named in honor of James O’Hara, who had extensive holdings throughout the present city which he had acquired from the Penn family in 1784. General O’Hara was a leading citizen and the pioneer in the manufacture of glass. In January 1847, a lot 24 by 100 feet was purchased on the corner of 25th and Smallman Streets. A house of four rooms was built on this site in March 1848, and in 1855 due to overcrowding, the house was razed to make way for several additions to the size of the lot. The school was closed in 1943 and the property sold for $15,000. The building was razed in 1944.
