Description
Bedford School, located at 10th Street and Bingham Street, was named in honor of Dr. Nathaniel Bedford, a surgeon in the garrison of Fort Pitt. His heirs donated the property on which the Baxter School was erected. The school, known as the Birmingham School No. 1, was built in 1850 and was the largest school in Birmingham. The original building had four large rooms and 80 pupils. It had no lights and was heated by open grates in each room. In 1873, when Birmingham was annexed to the City of Pittsburgh, the name of the school was changed. In November 1958, Bedford School was closed as a regular elementary school but remained open to cerebral palsy children until it was closed in 1960. It was sold in March 1960 to George H. Silverman.
