Description
Central High School, located at Bedford Avenue and Crawford Street, was built in 1872 at a cost of $200,000. The school was designed for 600 students and consisted of 14 classrooms, a large lecture room with raised seating, 2 apparatus rooms for chemistry and physics, a drawing room, a library, a 1,000 seat auditorium, a stage with proscenium and footlights, and requisite restrooms and offices. The architects that designed the building were Barr and Moser. Several prominent people served on the Central High School faculty, including one of America’s major female novelists, Willa Cather. In 1916, the faculty and students moved to the recently completed Schenley High School. From 1918 to 1933, Central’s building housed what was known as the “Short Course Business High School.” In 1946, Central High School was razed and much of its building material was hauled to Pittsburgh's suburban community of Mount Lebanon to be used in construction projects in that rapidly expanding area.
