Date

Description
View of the ultrasonic testing machine at Homestead's 160" Plate Mill. The machine used ultrasonic waves to test for defects in steel. The high frequency sound waves would be directed into steel immersed in the water tank. Imperfections in the steel would reflect the ultrasonic waves, thus warning of a defect. The introduction of this new piece of equipment was part of a general effort to increase product quality and competitiveness during the 1960s.
