  • By the 1920s better roads had encouraged public travel, and for a time, Monroeville became a tourist destination: a place for the weary city dweller to escape to on a pleasant day drive to the country. Recognizing the allure of the fresh air and pristine scenery, a group of entrepreneurs built the Burke Glen Amusement Park along old William Penn Highway in 1926.
