Description
Canoers line up across the Allegheny for a canoe race on the Hulton Course. This is probably a professional race, but canoeing was also a popular recreational activity in the summertime. During the 1880s and 1890s, professional rowing events were held on the Hulton Course in Oakmont. This course, which went from Twelve Mile Island to Verona, Pa was considered one of the best courses in the United States. To watch these rowing events, flatcars with bleachers would be set up on the railroad tracks for spectators. These flatcars, located on the Harmarville bank of the Allegheny, would follow the racers along the tracks. The races involved quite a bit of betting. The Hulton Course was discontinued at the very end of the nineteenth century due to charges of corruption, tampering with boats and rigged races. Originally from the Oakmont Centennial Book Collection.
