History

Pitt Township, established in 1788, was one of the first townships in Allegheny County. It contained a large amount of territory, including what is now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and extended to areas to the northwest.

Scope and Content Notes

This volume consists of copies of tax records from Pitt Township, Pennsylvania, spanning from 1795 to 1798. It includes the names of tax payers, the value of property they owned, and taxes they paid. The names are arranged alphabetically and chronologically as well as geographically within Pitt Township. Several of the years are listed twice. The copies were created by the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America in 1941. The earliest tax records of Allegheny County were destroyed in a fire in the Allegheny County Courthouse in 1882.

Gift to the Darlington Memorial Library in 1941.

Custodial History

This collection was located in the Darlington Memorial Library in the University's Cathedral of Learning until 2007 when it was moved to the ULS Archives Service Center for processing, storage, preservation and service. However, it remains in the custodianship of the ULS Special Collections Department.
