Description
Pictured here are the students and teachers of the Pennsylvania Female College and Preparatory School in 1887. They are standing in front of Berry Hall, the original building on campus. Dilworth Hall, the second building of the College, was not commissioned until 1888, at which time Berry Hall acquired its name to distinguish it from the second building. Berry Hall was the home of George A. Berry and after it was sold to the College trustees in 1870, it was converted to accommodate students. The first floor contained four large rooms which were used as classrooms. The second and part of the third floors were used to house resident students. A part of the third floor originally served as a gymnasium and small museum until 1871 when the College built an addition to Berry Hall for music rooms and a larger gymnasium. In 1895, the College added a fourth floor to Berry Hall and moved the gymnasium and music hall to separate buildings to make room for the growing student body. Berry Hall served as the hub of college life until Mellon Hall was acquired in 1940. Berry Hall was demolished in 1953, when the Braun, Falk, and Coolidge Halls were built on the site.
