Description
Miss Vanda E. Kerst was the head of PCW's expression department from 1907-1942. In addition to her teaching duties, Kerst sponsored the Dramatic Club and directed all dramatic undertakings on the campus from faculty plays to the Shakespeare Festival. She studied at the Curry School of Expression in Boston, Massachusetts and previously taught at Heidelberg College and her own school in Dayton, Ohio. During the 1919-1920 academic year, Kerst was the chairwoman of the college's fiftieth anniversary committee and co-authored the Jubilee pageant, Victory Through Conflict. In 1931, Kerst organized a verse-speaking choir, which was the first of its kind in an eastern college. The choir's readings included selections from the Bible, Greek drama, Shakespeare, and other works of literature. During the summers of 1937 and 1938, Kerst directed a successful choral speaking colony on campus.
