Description
The Irene Kaufmann Settlement (IKS) initiated efforts to improve the slums of Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood which it served, including documenting the conditions photographically and having better neighborhood projects. In 1957, after the IKS had moved from the Hill District to Pittsburgh's East End, the settlement was renamed the Anna B. Heldman Community Center. The Irene Kaufmann Settlement merged with the YM&WHA and evolved into the present-day Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. The JCC continues the tradition of the IKS in providing programs and services to the nonsectarian local community.
