Description
During the first half of the twentieth century H.J. Heinz Company salesmen, wearing derby hats, stiff collars, and stickpins traveled with a hammer and a clean white cloth. The salesmen tried to move their competitors’ products to the back or lower shelves and place the Heinz products at a strategic location to be easily seen by customers. By the mid-1950s the food industry in the United States was dramatically changing. Thousands of family-run neighborhood grocery stores were being steadily replaced by larger self-service stores and supermarket chains. As late as 1959, Heinz still was selling much of its products directly to grocers. Heinz changed this strategy by selling directly to wholesalers and chain stores, thus bypassing the grocer. This caused the eventual elimination of salesmen who dealt directly with grocers (pictured here).
