Description
Once the bottles were corked, they were wheeled over to the labeling tables (pictured here), where workers would apply paste-saturated labels to the bottles. The labeled bottles were then placed on pallets that were transported to the shipping room for delivery to customers. H.J. Heinz Company owned and operated its own glass factory in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, that produced the finest bottles, hand-blown from molds, in a variety of shapes. Designers created elegant signs and labels, such as the keystone shaped (from the keystone state) labels (pictured here). Printed on lithographic stones, often with twenty colors, their sharp detail and deep jewel-like tones were a marvel. Selling products under a registered brand name, as Heinz was doing, was a new trend in the early 1900s. This new trend affected the grocery business by changing the appearance of the store and its stock, and subsequently allowing the grocer to concentrate on other business matters instead of wasting time weighing and packaging bulk merchandise.
