Description
The Quality Control Department at H.J. Heinz Company had its beginnings in 1912 when Howard Heinz hired Herbert N. Riley, one of the company’s first bacteriologists. Riley began to apply scientific methods to the processing, preservation, and production of food. Eventually, in 1918 these methods were moved from a laboratory environment into the factory line. All the documentation related to these procedures and methods was written in code and kept locked in a safe. According to Riley, Heinz may have been the first United States company to coin the term “quality control department.”
