Description
“The House Where We Began” at the H.J. Heinz Company main plant in Pittsburgh’s North Side neighborhood. In 1869 H.J. Heinz began raising horseradish on a small plot of land in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. H.J. Heinz, the only salesman, and two women and a boy began processing the horseradish in one room and the basement in this house. They sold the product to the local community and within two years, the business had outgrown its Sharpsburg home and was moved to a leased building in downtown Pittsburgh. In 1889 the facility was inadequate and a decision was made to purchase thirty-six city lots in the City of Allegheny, currently known as the North Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh. By 1919 the H.J. Heinz Company had over 6,500 employees, 25 branch factories, 85 salting stations, 53 tomato receiving stations, and 111 pickle receiving stations. Business continued to prosper overseas in England and elsewhere in Europe. By 1995 H.J. Heinz Company’s global sales were over $8 billion with almost half coming from its overseas operations and seventy-five percent from non-Heinz brand products.
