Description
When H.J. Heinz Company first packaged its jarred products (including ketchup) in the late 1800s, they were originally sealed with corks and wax, pictured here. Over time this process was gradually replaced with the screw cap that we know today. The Heinz plant was a haven for women seeking employment, as it was a welcome improvement over other jobs that were open to them at the time. This other work had low pay, long hours, and an uncertain future. Heinz, on the other hand, provided many amenities to its female workers, including free manicures to those who handled food, free rides through the city and parks during the summer, as well as access to a physician and a dentist and other amenities to maintain their morale.
