Description of the photograph reads, “LAUNCHING A RIVER BARGE – View of a J & L gondola barge being launched from the Jones & Laughlin boat yards in Pittsburgh. All modern river barges are built of steel and are designed for various specific purposes. Some are mad for transporting cola, others for sand and gravel, and still others for carrying cargoes which would be damaged by exposure to the elements.”
