Description
Ground was broken for the construction of the new Jones & Laughlin Steel Company’s Aliquippa Works plant in 1907 at the former Woodlawn amusement park at Woodlawn, Pennsylvania, located about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh in Beaver County. The first blast furnace was completed in 1909 with two more finished in 1910, a fourth in 1912, and a fifth in 1920. In 1909 construction of the steel producing and rolling facilities commenced. In 1910 Jones & Laughlin entered into the wire business with the completion of the new rod and wire mills. In 1912 open-hearth steel was first produced and in that same year the mill had an annual capacity of 250,000 tons of ingots; by 1930 the capacity had increased to 1,420,000 tons of ingots. In 1982 the Aliquippa Works, the largest industrial plant in Beaver County employing about 14,950 men and women at its peak, began its decline with the closing of the Rod and Wire Mill. By 1990 the last of the blast furnaces at the site were razed.
