Description
Workers installing a roll during the major expansion and erection of new facilities to increase steel production at the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation’s Aliquippa Works. The blooming mill was designed to roll square blooms ranging from 7 inches to 12 5/8 inches, and slabs 25 to 42 inches wide by 4 to 7 1/2 inches thick, and ingots running from 22 inches by 24 inches (9000 pounds) up to 24 inches by 47 inches (23,500 pounds). The mill rolled at speeds up to 1,350 feet per second and averaged about 225 net tons per hour. The 44-inch Blooming Mill was shut down in October 1984.
