The metallurgical department was primarily responsible for the quality control of raw materials to finished products for the steel works, tubular products, tin plate, and wire products departments. The metallurgical building, centrally located in the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation’s Aliquippa Works facility located about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh on the Ohio River in Beaver County, housed physical and metallographic laboratories, and extensive tabulating equipment for analyzing statistical records. The physical laboratory contained a machine shop, testing equipment, and facilities for heat treatment of samples. The metallographic laboratory was equipped for photomicroscopy and photography. The Aliquippa Works was the largest industrial plant in Beaver County, employing about 14,950 men and women at its peak.
