Description
Pittsburgh Locomotive and Car Works, formed in Pittsburgh in 1865 by Andrew Carnegie, built most of the P&LE’s (Pittsburgh & Lake Erie) early locomotives, and continued to supply from its Pittsburgh Works the bulk of P&LE’s steam power after merging with American Locomotive Company in 1901. Its first locomotive was built in 1867. P&LE began numbering its locomotives in order of acquisition. The P&LE Number 31 Switcher 0-4-0 Type locomotive pictured here, was built in July 21, 1881, and was used in the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation's yards. It was considered the oldest and simplest of steam locomotives. The 0-4-0 denotes an engine with no guiding wheels, four driving wheels and no trailing wheels. P&LE’s could make speed, but they were too light to pull heavy loads. This locomotive was sold or scrapped by 1898.
