  • Caption on the front of the photograph reads, “Illustrates arrangement of plant, coke oven extreme right, Stock House, Engine Pump House, Inclined Hoist, and Mr. Laughlin’s stoves.” The output of a blast furnace depended on its size and shape. The bulge, or bosh, of the barrel-shaped structure was usually 20 feet in diameter, while its height varied between 85 and 100 feet. Located nearby were four stoves, about 75 to 100 feet in height, which provided a continuous source of hot air to blow into the blast furnace. The stoves were built of brick and generated gases that burned to heat the air to temperatures of 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.
