Description
Coal from a Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation's mine hauled over a Bessie track into mill. Jones & Laughlin purchased mines and leases of mineral rights in the rich iron ore section of Lake Superior in order to provide raw materials for its Eliza furnaces. Jones & Laughlin were among the first to purchase Connellsville coal mines and use Connellsville coke in Pittsburgh. The Monongahela River was used extensively to transport the coal from the Vesta Mines to the beehive ovens of the Eliza furnaces.
