Caption on the front reads, “Old Brown Residence. Laboratory and offices for structural shop. Dad on porch – steam shows exhaust from sand baths used in laboratory. Steam went thru coils in sand bed was used to dissolve material for testing analysis – sand bed was 2’6 x 2.” In addition, a caption on the right border of the photograph reads, “It was enclosed in glass. Fumes were very bad. First test was for silicon – then sulphur in boring of pig iron. Nitric acid hydrochloric acids were used to dissolve material for test.”
