Description
Construction of the Blooming mill at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation's Second Avenue facility, 1885. The roof was constructed on the ground and subsequently hoisted into place by ropes. Blooming mills or Slabbing mills, prepared the metal by reducing it to blooms, billets, slabs and sheets-bars. The blooms, semi-finished hot rolled products that are rectangular in cross section, were shipped to the finishing mills to be processed further. These mills produced the various shapes, forms and sizes that were sold to customers via the warehouses and offices maintained by Jones & Laughlin in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Saint Louis, and other locations.
