Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Rear View - Allegheny County Courthouse and jail at time of dedication (note the flags flying on the tower). Left- 1. Fourth Avenue Baptist Church - corner 4th and Ross Streets, 2. First Ward School, 3. Old Iron City College, 4. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 5. St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, 6. Trinity Episcopal Church (now cathedral), 7. German Lutheran Church, 8. County Morgue, 9. Jail Wall, 10. Fourth Avenue Station.” The official dedication of the building was July 4th, 1899, although the cornerstone and decorative emblems show the date 1897.
