Description of the photograph reads, “This photograph shows a section of the 40-foot vacuum tube in the Westinghouse atom-smasher which has an outside diameter of 17 inches and is one of the largest tubes of its kind in the world. It can be exhausted so completely that it contains only one seven-hundred-and-sixty-millionths as many air molecules as are in the same volume of normal atmosphere.”
