Description
KQV Radio sponsored the first Pittsburgh performance of the controversial rock-musical HAIR, a formerly off-Broadway musical created by James Rado, Gerome Ragni, and Galt MacDermot in the late 1960s. The performance was met with resistance in the Pittsburgh area, a number of citizens vowed to boycott the KQV sponsors if the show was permitted to go as scheduled. While KQV did lose a few advertisers, the show went on as planned on May 17, 1971. KQV first appeared on local radios on November 19, 1919, as 8ZAE. The station was owned by the Doubleday Hill Electric Company. In January 1921, 8ZAE became known as KQV (King of Quaker Valley), although the FCC did not officially grant the call letters until January 9, 1922. In its earliest days the station often ran advertisements for radios, and during the 1960s KQV became known as a popular Top-40 station. Through much of KQV's life as a Top-40 station, KQV was owned by the American Broadcasting Company and was a news affiliate of ABC. On October 15, 1975, KQV switched to an all news format.
