Description
The Sarah Mellon Scaife Foundation donated approximately $933,000 in 1967 for the construction on a new wing that doubled the West Park Aviary-Conservatory’s size. Most of the new addition is a huge rectangular building that covers a walkthrough sub-tropical swamp (containing water plants growing in it and bananas and palms bordering it) and other exhibits. The Aviary was one of the first zoos to present its collection in free-flight rooms and natural exhibits with over 25,000 square feet of space. In 1993, the United States Congress designated it as the nation's official avian institution, and its name was changed to the National Aviary. Today, it is the nations only independent indoor nonprofit bird zoo and home to over 600 birds of more than 220 species.
