Description
Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “Demolition of existing buildings including People’s Natural Gas Co. Building between Smithfield and Oliver and Wm. Penn Way and 6th Avenue – location of new Parking Park – underground parking area.” Many buildings were cleared making way for the construction of Mellon Square Park in the acre between Smithfield Street, Oliver and Sixth Avenues, and William Penn Place in downtown Pittsburgh. Enough material was removed from the construction site to fill the equivalent of 540 boxcars and enough concrete was poured into the hole to pack 90 boxcars solid. The 1.37-acre, $7.9 million park opened in 1955.
