Description
The initial stages of the Fort Pitt Bridge construction. Pictured (right center) is the cofferdam site, which was a temporary watertight enclosure that was pumped dry exposing the bottom of the Monongahela River so that the main concrete piers of the bridge could be constructed. Due to the increasing volume of traffic, a new highway that bisected Point State Park was required. The previous bridge (Point Bridge) near the present day Fort Pitt Bridge had to be removed and replaced with a new one about 900 feet upstream. The steel bowstring arch, double-deck Fort Pitt Bridge opened on June 19, 1959.
