Caption on the back of the photograph reads, “View of the Sites for proposed School of Public Health of the University of Pittsburgh and Extension of Children’s Hospital including the block bounded by De Sota St., O’Hara St., N. Bouquet St., and Fifth Avenue and the area south-east of Children’s Hospital along De Sota St., and Fifth Avenue.” Today, a group of about forty buildings that comprise the University of Pittsburgh’s Health Center, are located in the block bounded or touched by DeSoto, Terrace, Darragh Streets, and Fifth Avenue. This section of Oakland constitutes one of the world’s most concentrated medical complexes, where for half a century such people as Jonas Salk, Benjamin Spock, Erik Erikson, and Thomas Starzl have practiced medicine.
