Description
Governor David L. Lawrence (center, holding pick), former mayor of Pittsburgh, accompanied by other government officials, breaks ground for the new State Office Building on Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh’s Gateway Center. The State Office Building, located in the Golden Triangle in downtown Pittsburgh, was Pittsburgh’s first multi-colored skyscraper. The architectural firm of Altenhof and Bown designed the 16-story, $8.5 million structure. The two lower floors of the building contained white marble, while the main shaft of the structure was sheathed in blue aluminum panels and each was framed by natural aluminum. The use of colored metal panels was an innovation for Pittsburgh based Alcoa (Aluminum Company of America).
