Description
The Hillman Library is located in Schenley Plaza on the University of Pittsburgh campus in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. The land bordering Forbes Field was donated to the University by John Hillman in the 1950s, and Max Abramovitz designed the master plan for the buildings that were to be located on that site. Construction on the library began in 1964, seven years before the demolition of Forbes Field. The major funding for its construction was provided by the Hillman Family and the Hillman Foundation ($3 million) and the General State Authority ($8 million). The library was originally designed to hold 2.5 million volumes and 2400 readers at one time, as well as administrative offices, separate rooms serving varying purposes including reading, conferences, and smoking, as well as additional departments to house periodicals, rare books, government documents, archives, and audiovisual equipment. The windows were designed so that they provided sufficient light to the interior while remaining inconspicuous from the outside. The library opened in 1968.
