Description
The Wabash Terminal occupied a key space in the area being cleared to make way for Gateway Center in downtown Pittsburgh. Until its destruction by fire in 1946, the terminal was the largest Beaux-Arts building in Pittsburgh. When constructed in 1904, it was considered one of the most magnificent railroad terminals in the United States. It became one of five major railroad terminals in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, P&LE, and Fort Wayne were some the others). The destruction by fire of the terminal was a major factor in the decision to move ahead with plans to raze the area below Stanwix Street to make way for Gateway Center and Point State Park.
