Description
Concept drawing of the Lower Hill section of Pittsburgh developed by architects Mitchell & Ritchey in 1956. The reconstruction of the Lower Hill began in 1955 with $17 million in federal grants. This project encompassed 100 acres, the demolition of 1300 buildings and 413 businesses, and the displacement of 8000 residents (a majority of them African-Americans) in an attempt to extend the revitalization of the adjacent Golden Triangle. The Lower Hill redevelopment plan never reached its objectives due to several factors, including the bankruptcy of the plan’s major supporter, William Zeckendorf, and the decision by the Heinz foundations to locate their new concert hall in the Golden Triangle instead of the Lower Hill.
