Description
The Mesta Machine Company Pickling Machine was designed to clean or “pickle” by removing oxide or scale from iron and steel sheets used for making tin plate. After successfully being used in pickling iron and steel sheets, the machine was subsequently used to pickle wire coils, strip steel, pipe, stamped metal parts, cartridge cases, drop forgings, and various other products made up of iron, steel, brass, and copper. The machine was operated by either steam or compressed air. When operated by steam, the exhaust steam was used for heating the acid in the pickling tanks. One advantage of using the Mesta pickling machine was that no skilled workers were required to operate it. The machine automatically shook the crates in a vertical motion in the acid vats at a rate of about thirty strokes per minute while the material was being pickled, this proved to be a very efficient method of thoroughly cleaning the material. In addition, the machine eliminated the use of large overhead cranes because it lifted the crates in and out of the vats.
