Description
Foster School was named in honor of noted Pittsburgh poet and writer, Stephen C. Foster. The land on which the school sat was originally owned by Colonel William B. Foster who used it as a military burial ground. In 1886 Foster’s descendants donated the land to the Pittsburgh. The school, located on Main Street near Butler Street, remained in use until 1939. It was one of three schools in the Washington Sub-District, known as the Lawrenceville Borough Schools, until 1868 when the borough was incorporated into the City of Pittsburgh. The property was eventually leased to the Catholic Boys Center in 1955.
