Description
Brushton Elementary School, erected in 1892 and located at the corner of Brushton and Milford Streets, was named in honor of the Brush Family who were residents of the area for many years. A notable member of the family was Jared M. Brush, who served as mayor of Pittsburgh from 1869 to 1872. An increase in population in this area necessitated an addition to the school in 1896. In 1913 the basement of the building was fitted for kindergarten, domestic science, and manual training departments. The school closed in 1943, and the property was sold in 1948 for $10,000 so that a community center could be constructed.
