Description
Madison Elementary School students (left to right) Barry Bisogni, Camara Allen, and Ted Floyd stand guard at the gate of their medieval castle. Madison Elementary School opened on Milwaukee and Orion Streets in 1902. Ulysses L. Peoples originally designed the building in 1890. He included monkeys and other animals in his architectural decorations. Architects Pringle and Robling designed an addition to the building in 1929. The school was originally the fifth school in the Minersville School District and in 2003 served the Schenley Heights, Schenley Farms, and the Upper Hill District neighborhoods of Pittsburgh.
