Description
Allegheny High School was the first high school in Allegheny City. At the time of its construction, Allegheny City was a distinct city with no connection with the Pittsburgh school system. The first sessions of the school were held in a four-room frame building on Sherman Avenue in 1883. In 1889 a new structure was erected on the same site and in 1904, an addition facing Arch Street was built. The present Allegheny High School was dedicated on March 11, 1938. The band program in the Pittsburgh’s public secondary schools offered students the opportunity to study woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments (pictured here).
