Description
Allegheny High School was the first high school built in the City of Allegheny. The first sessions at the school were held in a four-room frame building on Sherman Avenue in 1883. In 1889 a new structure was erected on the same site, and in 1904 an addition facing Arch Street was built. In 1907 Allegheny City was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh and the school then came under the authority of the Pittsburgh Public school system. The present Allegheny High School, known today as the Allegheny Traditional Academy Middle School, was dedicated on March 11, 1938. Allegheny High School is a magnet school in the Pittsburgh Public School system emphasizing structure and discipline, academic achievement, character development, and community pride. Workshops were conducted for elementary and junior high school students in baby and child care, as part of the Home Economics curriculum.
