Description
In the 1950s Sterrett Elementary School offered home economics and shop classes to both boys and girls. Sterrett Elementary School honors James P. Sterrett, Judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. The original Sterrett School was built in 1840 where the Homewood Cemetery is now located. This structure was later replaced by the second Sterrett School at the corner of South Lang Avenue and Reynolds Street in 1899. A newspaper article at the time described it as “one of the handsomest structures of its kind in Allegheny County, having on its top an observatory which will house an eight-inch telescope to be presented by H. C. Frick to the scholars.” Originally built as an elementary school, Sterrett was converted to an annex of Reizenstein Middle School in 1977. In 1979 it became Sterrett Classical Academy for grades six through eight.
