Description
Cowley Elementary School, located on Sherman Avenue in the North Side section of Pittsburgh, was renamed from the Second Ward School of Allegheny City to the Mary Junkin Cowley School in May 1926. Mrs. Cowley was on the first court-appointed Board of Education in 1911 and served as President of the Playground and Vacation School Association of Allegheny County for 34 years. She made possible forty playgrounds in the North Side, and dedicated her life to the establishment of parks and playgrounds in the underprivileged districts of Pittsburgh. Cowley School was first built in 1895. It was remodeled or rebuilt in 1900. The school sat in the midst of a congested district of private homes and boarding houses. The school closed in 1973 and the property was sold in 1979.
