Description
The first school in the Ninth Ward was organized in 1856. In 1858, the Ninth Ward, part of Ross Township, became part of McClure Township, and the Ninth Ward School became a public school in 1859. A brick building containing three rooms was built in 1867 at a cost of about $6,000 to accommodate for the increasing student population. The school was located on 100 Westhall Street. In 1873, a new and more spacious building was built with twelve rooms and large hall at a cost of $40,000 to house the increasing student body. The school was closed in February 1965 and sold to the Urban Redevelopment Authority in May 1974.
