  • Walter X. Eibeck (1915-1992) was a Pittsburgh singer featured for 10 years on KDKA radio. He sang lead tenor for 40 years with Circle W Four, formerly the Westinghouse Quartet, a barbershop quartet which travelled throughout the US and Canada and performed on USO tours throughout the world. He and his group were affiliated with the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBQSA). Eibeck had a day job as a bricklayer. Eibeck talks about singing jobs he had on Pittsburgh radio programs in the 1940's, early radio broadcasting procedures in general, and salaries for musicians appearing on the radio and on TV. Eibeck talks about TV appearances with different singers and groups starting in 1953. Eibeck mentions the musicians unions he joined. He mentions how radio and TV productions were run, how long the slots were, the many people involved and the differences between appearing on the radio vs. live TV broadcasts.
