Description
Carl McVicker Sr. (1904-1993) was a music educator at Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh from 1927 –1961, and later at Penn Hills High School. At Westinghouse, McVicker instituted a new music program that included jazz, started a swing band as an alternative to the concert orchestra and marching band, and established the Westinghouse High School Orchestra Club. He had four ensembles, the Beginners Orchestra, the Junior Orchestra, the Senior Orchestra, and the K-Dets. Several of his students became quite prominent in the music world, including Erroll Garner, Billy Strayhorn and Patricia Prattis Jennings. He also taught brass instruments as a member of the faculty at the Pittsburgh Musical Institute. McVicker talks about the high school orchestras that he started at Westinghouse High School; state orchestra contests; racial bias that his student's faced; Oscar Demmler; Vladimir Bakaleinikoff; and introducing jazz into the Pittsburgh public school bands.
