View from the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad tracks looking east to the Smithfield Street Bridge, showing people and trolleys crossing the bridge shortly after the 1936 St. Patrick's Day flood. The Liberty Bridge is visible in the background. The flood occurred over a period of four days after heavy rains, culminating with the crest of the Ohio River at 46 feet. The 1936 flood had far reaching effects, causing some $250 million in damages and an estimated 108 fatalities.
